What is Appendicitis

Appendicitis is a condition where the appendix, a small tube-like organ attached to the large intestine, becomes inflamed and infected. If left untreated, it can burst, leading to serious complications. Surgical removal of the appendix (appendectomy) is the only effective treatment.

Appendicitis usually occurs when the appendix becomes blocked. Common causes include:

    • Obstruction – A blockage due to hardened stool, foreign objects, or growths.
    • Infection – Bacterial or viral infections that cause inflammation.
      1. Enlarged Lymph Nodes – Swelling in response to an infection can block the appendix.
        1. Digestive Issues – Chronic constipation or inflammatory bowel disease may contribute to appendicitis.

The symptoms of appendicitis often develop suddenly and worsen over time. Common signs include:

            • Pain that starts near the belly button and moves to the lower right abdomen
            • Sharp, intense abdominal pain that worsens with movement or pressure
            • Loss of appetite
            • Nausea and vomiting
            • Low-grade fever that may increase as the condition worsens
            • Bloating and difficulty passing gas
            • Diarrhea or constipation

A ruptured appendix can cause severe pain, high fever, and life-threatening infections. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms.

Ruptured Appendix – Infection spreads inside the abdomen, leading to peritonitis (life-threatening infection).

Abscess Formation – Pus collects inside the abdomen, requiring additional drainage procedures.
Sepsis – The infection spreads throughout the body, which can be fatal.
